Herbs to the Rescue!
Fall is soon coming and before we know it winter will be on us. Now is the time to harvest some herbs. There are so many good herbs.It is fun walking and finding herbs that grow all around us. Because of the interest, we will be having another herb walk, please let me know if you can join us. We always have a great time, and it can be a good outing for children, as well as a great home-school outing.
Today, I want to give you a little synopsis of a few great herbs.
Alfalfa has been called the “King of Plants” since it is extremely rich in vitamins and minerals. It has eight essential amino acids and the highest chlorophyll contents of any plant. It is used as a base in many combinations and vitamin formulas because it permits rapid assimilation of plant elements. It is most popular as a blood purifier and as a cure for all inflammations, including rheumatism.
Astragalus Root stimulates the immune system, and has an anti-viral agent that helps the body destroy viruses and other harmful microbes. It has been used to treat colds, upper respiratory infections, cancer, asthma, and nervous conditions, as well as to lower blood sugar and blood pressure and boost energy levels.
Burdock Root is a blood purifier and has been used to neutralize and eliminate toxins in the system. It is one of the best herbs for chronic skin problems. It increases flow of urine, and is excellent for gout, rheumatism, canker sores, syphilis, leprosy. You can make a salve and apply externally for skin eruptions, burns, and wounds.
Catnip is wonderful for small children and infants, and useful in pain of any kind. It is a mild nervine and has been used to treat colic, anxiety, and nervousness. Catnip is a traditional cold and flu remedy. It helps relieve fevers by inducing sleep while producing perspiration without increasing the heat of the system, and is used to treat diarrhea. This harmless remedy may be taken freely.
Dandelion The entire plant may be eaten. The green is a blood purifier and considered a “bitter herb” and is high in nutritive salts. Dandielion roots increase the flow of urine and are slightly laxative, and has been used to aid digestion. It is seful in all kinds of kidney trouble, diabetes, dropsy, and inflammation of the bowels, as well as having a beneficial effect on female organs. Dandelion also increases the activity of the liver. Roasted roots make excellent substitute for coffee.
Juniper Berries are effective as a tea for kidney, urinary, and bladder trouble. It is excellent as a spray or fumigation of a room, as it destroys all fungi. Juniper berries are helpful in preventing disease. Chew the berries or use a strong tea when exposed to contagious diseases.
Milk Thistle Seed is one of the strongest liver protectors. Unlike any other substance, the silymarin found in the thistle seeds regenerates liver cells and guards it from damage by pollutants, toxins, and viral invaders. It is able to lessen the devastation and fatality of cirrhosis, hepatitis, and mushroom poisoning.
Nettle is very nourishing, with significant amounts of vitamins C and A, calcium, silicon, potassium, chloride, chlorophyll, protein, and dietary fiber. It is a good hair tonic, since it stimulates hair growth. It is a blood purifier and increases the efficiency of liver and kidney function.
Sage has many benefits. It is said to be good for the liver and blood, strengthening the muscles, increasing urination, restoring hair color, helping with painful joints, restoring memory, helping with fevers, and is a tonic for the nervous system that strengthens digestion.
Yarrow is one herb that should be in every home. Yarrow is unsurpassed for flu and fevers. Use it abundantly at the beginning of a cold and it will usually break it up within 24 hours. It also helps respiratory problems. You need to drink it warm. Yarrow is good for all childhood diseases, and has been used for diarrhea, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, and used to help the glandular system. Yarrow also relieves kidney and bladder problems.
