In all of our holiday festivities, Christmas can still be a time to remember the remarkable birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Christmas Story
Most of us have heard the true Christmas story of baby Jesus being born in a manger, and the shepherds and wisemen coming to worship him. Yet, there is much more to this story that we need to consider. Do we know WHO this Jesus really is?
He is the Creator. "For by him [Jesus] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him." (Colossians 1:16)
He is God. Jesus claimed to be God's Son and made Himself to be equal with God. This is the main reason why the religious leaders wanted Him dead! Several times, Jesus said to them, even if you don't believe me, look at what I do and believe. (John 14:11; John 10:25,37-38). Jesus healed the sick, made the lame to walk, opened the eyes of the blind, walked on water, and even raised the dead. Nicodemus said of him, "No man can do what thou doest except God be with him." (John 3:2)
He is the Messiah or Promised One. There are many prophecies of a Messiah or Promised one that was to come, some of these were: that he would be born of a virgin, he would be born in Bethlehem, he would come out of Egypt, he would be betrayed, his garments would be gambled over, he would be buried with the rich, and much more. In fact, there are over 300 prophecies about Jesus that he fulfilled.
He is the Saviour. When Jesus was born, the angels announced to the Shepherds, "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:12)
Throughout the Bible, Jesus is continually referred to as the Saviour. The Apostle John calls him the Saviour of the world (John 4:42). Paul called him the Saviour of all men (I Timothy 4:10). The early Apostles knew this and stated that, "we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world." (I John 4:14). Other passages also talk about Jesus being the Saviour (Philippians. 3:20; I Timothy 1:1; II Timothy 1:10; Titus 1:4).
If Jesus is the Saviour of the world and all mankind, the question we need to ask is, "What do we need to be saved from?" In the Christmas story, the angel that spoke to Joseph gave the answer, "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21) The purpose of Jesus coming to earth was to save mankind from their sins. All of us have sinned at one time or another, and God has said that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. (Romans 3:23; 6:23)
He is the ONLY way to Heaven and Eternal Life. Jesus said himself, "I am the way, the Truth, and the Life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6). "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) The Bible states, "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." (John 3:36)
