Issue 206    October 17, 2016

Are YOU ready for the Flu Season?

September through March is considered the "Flu Season."  Influenza, commonly called "the flu" is caused by a virus that infects the respiratory tract.  It is more severe than a cold.

Flue symptoms can be mild to severe, and the most common symptoms are:  fever  (100 -103 °F), runny nose, sore throat, coughing, head and body ache, muscle plain, feeling tired. The flu can last 1-2 weeks.  Most people people recover from the flu during this time, but a some do develope serious life-threatening complications, such as viral pneumonia.  Those who are most suseptible are young children, the elderly, pregnant women, those with chronic health problems.

A pandemic is a global disease outbreak.  Influenza pandemics have happen several times in history.

  • Spanish  influenza killed 40-50 million people in 1918.
  • Asian influenza killed 2 million people in 1957-58 (70,000 in the U.S.)
  • Hong Kong  influenza  killed 1 million people in 1968-69 (34,000 in the U.S.)
The Flu Viruses
There are three different types of Flu viruses:  A, B, and C.
Influenza A viruses are the most virulent human pathogens among the three influenza types and cause the severest disease.  It is responsible for many pandemics, including the Spanish Flu of 1918, Asian Flu in 1957, Hong Kong Flu of 1968, Bird Flu in 2004 and the Swine Flu in 2009.

Influenza B is less common than influenza A, and mutates at a rate 2–3 times slower than type A, and is less genetically diverse. Because of this a degree of immunity is usually acquired at an early age.  The reduced rate of antigenic change, combined with its limited host range, ensures that pandemics of influenza B do not occur.

Influenza C virus infects humans, dogs and pigs.  It is less common and usually only causes mild sickness in children.

Influenza can be spread in three main ways:  direct transmission,  airborne route, and through hand-to-eye, nose, or mouth from a contaminated surface or personal contact.  When an infected person sneezes or coughs more than half a million virus particles can be spread to those in the area.  It is important to wash our hands often, and to cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze, and avoid those who are sick.

Since the Flu is a virus, antibiotics do not work, but fortunately there are several natural products that do work. At lHerbs4You, we do have herbal products that are very effective against viruses.  Furthermore, on October 27, we will be having a class about Boosting Your Immunity, so make sure to sign up for it.
