Healthy Weight Loss
Summer is coming, and many are hoping to shed a few extra pounds. I often get asked what diet to use and how to lose weight. There are many different diets and products out there that are said to help. Some work and some don't. The bottom line for weight loss is, and will always be, the same: Eat healthy and get balanced. One of the main problems with dieting is gaining weight after the diet. Another problem is if we are not balanced, it can be very hard to loose weight, even if we diet and exercise. Being balanced means our thyroid and other systems are working well.
The healthy diet is a positive diet, one which we focus on what we can eat not on what we cannot eat. In the book, Eat to Live, Dr. Joel Fuhrman gives the formula for permanent weight-loss and health, which is:
H = N/C (Health equals Nutrients over Calories). Dr. Fuhrman states, "Your permanent weight loss is to eat predominantly those foods that have a high proportion of nutrients to calories." Every food must be evaluated using this formula.
Another fact to consider is that all calories come from only three elements: carborhydrates, fats, and proteins. Nutrients abound in whole foods. According to Dr. Fuhrman vegetables rank the highest in nutrient density, then comes fresh fruit. In third place are beans; next are raw nuts and seeds; meat and cheese are close to the bottom of the list (pp. p155-156).

Here is the plan for healthy weight loss:
- The salad is the main dish. Leafy greens are the foods with the highest nutrient to calorie ratio, so eat your salad. The goal is to eat at least one pound of greens every day. Avoid commercial salad dressings, and make your own.
- Eat raw fresh fruit, at least 4 servings a day.
- Eat more than one pound of other non-starchy vegetables. This includes green beans, broccoli, radishes, cauliflower, okra, jicama, mushrooms, eggplants.
- Eat beans or legumes. Beans are a powerhouse of superior nutrition. They reduce cholesterol and blood sugar, and help prevent food cravings. They are digested slowly which helps stabilize blood sugar. Eat at least 1 cup a day.
- Only eat 1 serving of whole grains a day.
- Eliminate animal and dairy products for the six weeks of intense weight-loss.
- Take a tablespoon of ground flax seeds daily. This will provide the omega 3 fats that help protect against diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
- Consume nuts and seeds in limited amounts, but not more than one ounce a day.
This weight-loss plan is for six weeks and most people are able to loose 10-25 lbs. during this time. There is more information in the book Eat to Live.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, we're having an OPEN HOUSE, for you to be able to check out the popular Crazy Wrap. It is a wrap that you can put on your belly or other part of your body to help tone and strengthen. Many have gotten rid of excess cellulite and fat. We'll be providing a FREE LUNCH as well. So come on over and see what it's all about.
