Dear <<First Name>>,

I hope you are doing well and that you're getting excited for next week. Tuesday is Just 24, CLADC's 24-hour campaign to fund access to justice. Earlier this week I shared Ms. H's story and how your support can make a life-changing difference for someone in need.

You can read more stories and give early to the campaign here, but first, I'd like to share a few thoughts about access to justice and how that connects with one of our most prominent areas of need at CLADC.

Pursuing access to justice means we are working to make sure that every person gets a fair outcome based on the merits of their case. This means at least two things: adequate legal advice or representation and fair court procedures.

When you invest in CLADC, you're expanding access to justice by making sure that people have the legal advice they need, and when advice isn't enough, that they have an advocate.

This may seem most obvious when you imagine two parties debating in a courtroom, but many important cases take place outside of the courtroom.

Washington, DC allows people with certain criminal records to petition the court to have those records sealed. This is life-changing in removing barriers to good jobs and safe housing. But there is no right to an attorney for this process and it’s particularly complex, which usually requires people to pay a private attorney over $1,000 to handle the process.

This means that two people committing the same crime can serve their sentence, turn their lives around, stay out of trouble for years, and become eligible under the law to have their records sealed. And yet, only the person who can afford it has access to this life-changing process.

This is not justice.

No one should be denied access to the clean slate allowed by the law simply because they cannot afford to hire an attorney. This is why low-income DC residents, like our client Mr. B, need CLADC. This is why they need you to invest in access to justice.

We have over a dozen clients on our waitlist for record sealing cases alone, and more call in needing our services every week.

Will you donate towards our Just 24 campaign and ensure everyone, no matter their income, has access to the legal help they need?
