Dear Parents and Students

Welcome to our first (and rather later than anticipated!) HEO newsletter of the new academic year.  With half term just around the corner and students almost half way through one of the busiest and longest terms of the year, it is the perfect time to reflect on what has happened so far in terms of higher education and future planning, and to explain what lays ahead.

DC University and Career Fair

It’s hard to believe that our fifth university fair and second career fair took place last month - larger, buzzier and more well attended than ever before! The feedback from both university & career reps and students was overwhelmingly positive, with reps very impressed by the enthusiasm and high questions from our students, and students motivated and inspired by the many exciting options available.

Welcome HEO Ambassadors!

We are very excited to be working with a very talented group of Y10, 11 and 12 HEO Ambassadors who will be working with the HEO on a diverse range of projects, meeting and greeting university reps, and raising the profile of HE and careers among their peers.

Year 13…

Coffee Corner for Year 13 parents

Our recent HEO coffee morning introduced parents of Y13 students to what lies ahead in terms of the university application process and gave them a valuable opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns.

Y13 parents, don’t forget to brag!

Year 12…

Have been busy exploring the exciting options available. Keeping a flexible and open mind they have been attending university visits and learning about different admissions systems
Powerpoints from university fair – UK Powerpoints from university fair – US
They have also been introduced to our web-based university research platform - BridgeU.

For an overview of how this excellent tool operates and how it supports our students in the process

Year 10 & 11…

Have been very proactive in attending university visits and and have been busily reflecting on our recent career fair. Keep up the great work and we look forward to working with Year 11 students on their resumes and cover letters as they approach work experience next June.

PSAT - Wednesday 10 October

Students from Y10 and Y11 had the opportunity to take the PSAT last Wednesday 10 October. For any student contemplating studying in the US, this is a great opportunity to take a practice SAT.

HEO feature:

How do international students choose which university to go to?

Finding the right ‘fit’ is very much part of our philosophy in the whole research process, and the following two articles make a very interesting read on just what criteria international students base these important decisions on.

Why do students go to university and how do they
choose which one
How international students choose which
university to go to

We wish you all a very well deserved break over half term and looking forward to an equally busy and productive last few months of 2018!

Kind Regards,
Ms. Susie Blomfield & Mrs. Marisa Jackson
