Dear Parents and Students

As the end of another productive year approaches, we would like to recap on a few important events that took place this term and to give you some valuable information about what lies ahead in the new academic year.

In this newsletter:

Year 13

The HEO organized an informative Pre-Departure workshop on Wednesday 1 June for our recently graduated Year 13 students.  They had the valuable opportunity of chatting with alumni from a variety of universities around the world and received some practical advice about visas, living independently on a budget and how to cope with cultural adjustment as they embark on the next exciting stage of their journey.

Year 12 - Time to get writing

Students have been very busy working on their first draft of university essays and narrowing their choices.

Please note that the deadline for the first essay drafts is Friday 17 June. Completing their first draft before the summer will be of great benefit to students as there will be time to receive feedback from their counsellor and to work on improvements before the beginning of the academic year.

Preparing for the transition into Year 13

When students return in August as a senior in Year 13, they will have an incredibly busy time ahead of them.  To prepare both students and their parents for what lies ahead, the HEO organized a coffee morning and invited a couple of recently graduated students and a DC alum who has just completed her first year at the University of Exeter, to share their experiences on the whole process.

University Application Timeline for Year 13

Introducing the HEAPPS (Higher Education Applications) form

All university applications will be processed by the HEO.  To ensure efficient processing of applications, DC will supply references and school transcripts to complete the application process on the provision that students complete this simple HEAPPS form (click here) and abide by the following rules:
  1.  Students make 8 University applications
  2. Students must fill in the HEAPPS form properly and get it signed by their parents and their HE Counsellor.
  3. Students must complete the Gateway HE module indicating their intent to apply to the specified universities.
  4. If the HEO is required to send any documents by post/email to the universities, students must supply full contact details with clear indication of which documents need to be sent.
  5. A fee of HKD 100 will be charged per student to cover general administrative and any necessary postage costs. An E-Notice will be sent to all parents of current year 12 students next week. The deadline for payment is Friday 19 August 2016.
This form needs to be submitted to the HEO when all university applications have been completed and just before they are submitted. Please note that the HEO cannot guarantee that students’ requests will be processed on time if these requirements are not met.

Introducing BridgeU

Students and parents should have received an email from BridgeU providing them with login details to set up an account with this exciting university preparation platform.  If you have not received this email, please check your Spam first before contacting the HEO.  Students have attended a training workshop and are becoming familiar with the system which enables them to carry out valuable university research and matching, as well as strategy building and essay writing.  This is a system which we will be using very intensively over the coming months and will keep you posted of developments.

Farewell to Ms Yan…

We are very sad to bid farewell to a valued colleague and amazing counsellor, Amanda Yan, who has made such an important contribution to the HEO in her two years at DC, and had such a positive impact on so many students.  We wish her and her family every success and happiness in their exciting move to Beijing and look forward to keeping in touch and hearing all her news.

…and farewell to Ms Jenkins

We are also sad to bid farewell to our greatly appreciated and endlessly patient part-time assistant, Madeleine Jenkins, who has played a key role in ensuring the HEO ran smoothly. We congratulate her on her new career move which thankfully is only just round the corner.

Although they will be dearly missed, we are confident you all will be in capable hands with our new HE counsellor, Mrs Marisa Jackson, and our new full-time assistant, Ms Dorothy Ng. We look forward to introducing them both to you in August.

What a productive, fun and memorable year it has been for us all.  Wishing you a wonderful and well deserved summer holiday and look forward to seeing you in August.

Kind regards,

Ms Blomfield
Higher Education Counsellor
