Joint Programming is a research and innovation policy concept driven by societal challenges. Its aim is to tackle grand societal challenges through more efficient use of resources, by the alignment of funding at national level and through decreasing fragmentation in the European Research Area (ERA). There are over seventy active ERA-NETs, six Article 185 initiatives and ten Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs); for an overview see our joint programming website. This monthly newsletter provides in a nutshell up-to-date information for scientists, (research) policy actors, and other stakeholders.

About us

The JPI & ERA-NET team of the division Wageningen International at Wageningen Univerity & Research follows ERA policy and strategy, the JPIs, Art. 185 and ERA-NET (Cofund) Actions, specifically those in the areas of the bioeconomy, food, and the blue and green environment. Information is shared through website, newsletter, social media, and seminars. We support the liaison on the national as well as the European level. Moreover, we coordinate the European platform of bioeconomy ERA-NET Actions, lead alignment activities and European interactions within FACCE JPI Secretariat, and are involved in organising ERA-NET Cofund programmes.

Editorial - New Years' column

Bubbles and ice cream

Yesterday I had a coffee with a friend from the early days of FACCE-JPI. “Wageningen is a bubble”, he remarked, and immediately the image unfolded of the small city on the Rhine under a dome made out of a thin soapy membrane. Then the image of our knowledge institution for the quality of life, in a bubble. Other universities in their bubbles, ministries in theirs, and European institutions in small and big bubbles. Covent Garden building even has a bubbly shape. People, within their personal human-sized bubbles, shielding from the outside, making it cosy and comfortable inside. They walk in their offices, on the streets, at a Christmas market. Suddenly a lorry thunders in and bubbles shatter into tiny spheres, into tears.

My almost-five-year-old niece draws me from my thought-bubble. She is radiating and the images dissolve. She takes me outside, into the drizzly, cold, air, as she want to go the playground anyway. There is one other girl and a little while later I see them playing and laughing together. They walk up to me and I ask her “Who is your friend?” She answers: “I do not know her name yet, but we want juggling our ideas naming together   possibilities, risks, opportunities, governance, remedies, actions, measures, money, impacts, notleast goals”. While I blink my eyes, the other girl adds “and we want ice cream”.

A toast, to 2017, and the next generation of joint programming.

Peaceful Christmas, and best wishes for the New Year
With inspiration, imagination, health and happiness.
