Dear Pitt Students,

As the COVID-19 Medical Response Office (CMRO) and Provost Ann Cudd explained in their emails earlier today, the omicron variant demands that we rethink our plans for returning to campus for Spring term. For the health and safety of our community, it is important that we remain vigilant and that we employ the lessons we have learned during the past two years.

As you prepare to return to Pitt, I want to be clear about the University’s expectations for Spring term.

For students who live on-campus:
  • Students in University housing will move in on a staggered schedule beginning the weekend of Jan. 8 and 9. The purpose of the staggered move-in is to allow us to monitor the rate of positive COVID-19 cases in University housing and to decide if additional move-in delays are necessary. Please move in on your scheduled date, unless you have an academic, medical, or travel-related reason to move in on another date.

  • Pre-arrival test (Unvaccinated students only): University housing students who are unvaccinated and who have an approved exemption are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result reported to the University prior to their arrival. Please order your test today.

  • Post-arrival test: All University housing students—both vaccinated and unvaccinated with an exemption—are required to have a COVID-19 test result reported to the University after arrival on campus. Please order your test today to be delivered to your on-campus address.
    • Cohort 1: Jan. 8/9 – Return a completed test on Monday, Jan. 10
    • Cohort 2: Jan. 14/15 – Return a completed test on Monday, Jan. 17
    • Cohort 3: Jan. 21/22 – Return  a completed test on Monday, Jan. 24

  • Tests may be returned to residence hall mail rooms in drop boxes marked specifically for Quest.

  • All housing students must shelter-in-place until January 26.
For students who live off-campus:
  • Order an optional COVID-19 test from Quest for free asymptomatic testing.

  • Shelter in place and minimize your activities and errands to reduce possible exposure to the virus during the University’s remote return at the beginning of Spring term.

  • And as always, remember to wear a mask, get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms, isolate if you test positive, physically distance from others, and avoid large gatherings.

For all students:
  • Get your vaccine booster as soon as you are eligible to do so (six months after you are fully vaccinated).

  • Classes will be remote from Jan. 10 – Jan. 26, 2022.

  • Dining Services will be grab-and-go

  • No guests will be permitted in the residence halls during shelter in place.

  • On-campus student activities must be held virtually during shelter in place.

  • Welcome Week events and activities will be held virtually.

  • Indoor campus recreation facilities are closed during shelter in place. Outdoor recreation facilities remain open.
Thank you for your patience and adaptability as we make these changes to our plans. As always, I encourage you to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally, and please reach out to my office if we can assist you (deanofstudents@pitt.edu).

Sincerely,

  Carla M. Panzella, Ph.D.
  Dean of Students
