If you see this E-News, PLEASE check with other families in your 4-H Club to see if they saw! Because of all the links, these E-News letters may go in "Promo" folders (for those with gmail) or into spam or junk folders! Advise them to set as a "trusted sender" in their email program. If they DON'T find anywhere in their email folders - have them contact me so I can make sure they are subscribed.

This E-News is the PRIMARY method of communicating 4-H announcements and information from the Extension Office! Other methods involve people checking our Lincoln-Adams WSU Extension Website, and liking our Grant-Adams-Lincoln Facebook Page. And of course club leaders sharing information to members, parents, & youth leaders directly and/or through club Facebook pages or other means.

My favorite quote I found this week:
" . . . the fact is that kids learn to make good decisions by making decisions, not by following directions."

Alfie Kohn

Have a great week!

Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD)
What 4-H Livestock Exhibitors Need To Know

By Randy Williams, Lincoln/East Adams 4-H Program Coordinator

As YOU begin to purchase and feed your livestock for the Junior Livestock Show or county fair this spring and summer there is one additional item that is important for you to consider in feeding, managing and keeping records for your animal.
The use of medications in feed has been an effective and convenient method to prevent and treat certain disease conditions in groups of livestock. The proper use of feed medications has changed and will need to be under the oversight and order of a veterinarian. The order is known as a veterinary feed directive (VFD). Application Deadline Extended to March 22 for Avista/NWFCS, Garber and CAHNRS 4-H Scholarships

We just received word from WSU that there was a very low number of applicants for the Avista/NWFCS, Garber, and CAHNRS  4-H scholarships. Therefore, they have extended the deadline to March 22nd.
Some of these scholarships are only available to currently enrolled Lincoln-Adams 4-H high-school seniors!
If you are planning to go on to college next year we encourage you to apply! The application is submitted on-line. See:
However there is one form you must download to get a parent signature and a WSU Extension 4-H Faculty/Staff signature (after reviewing copies of your application documents) before you submit. Call the Extension Office ahead to make sure a 4-H staff person is available to review and sign.

4-H Age Divisions Explained

The new WA State 4-H Policy defines 4-H member age divisions based on AGE only. Grades are no longer considered for competitive divisions or eligibility for certain project areas.
These divisions are based on the age on October 1st of the 4-H year.
So for THIS year the age as of October 1, 2016 determines a 4-H member's age group.

Cloverbuds:  5 to 7 years of age
Junior:  8 to 10 years of age
Intermediate: 11 to 13 years of age
Senior: 14 to less than 19 years of age

Cloverbud members may participate in a variety of age appropriate projects but are NOT eligible for large animal projects, shooting sports, or food preservation activities. Cloverbuds may exhibit project work for participation, but can not be competitively judged.

More details are on page 9 of the WSU 4-H Policy and Procedure
