Welcome to a lunch seminar with Janne Holmén – Islands, Identity and Mental Maps

 How do islanders perceive their identity and their history in relation to the national state and to the surrounding world? In the seminar, historian Janne Holmén will discuss how regional history-writing has contributed to the formation of regional identities on the islands of the Baltic Sea (i.a. the Åland Islands).
The lunch seminar, that will be held in Swedish, is based on Holmén’s research presented in the publication "Islands of Identity: History-writing and identity formation in five island regions in the Baltic Sea”, which can be found here and his article "Mapping Historical Consciousness: Mental Maps of Time and Space among Secondary School Students from Ten Locations around the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas" published in the Peace Institute's journal "Journal of Autonomy and Security Studies" (JASS), here.

The Åland Islands Peace Institute offers a position as organization secretary for employment until 15.08.2019, with good opportunities for extension. The working time is 75%, or by agreement. The deadline for application is April 23, 2018. The tasks you are responsible for are functions related to coordination and central administration.

 This year's Kastelholm talks were held on Thursday, 22.3.2018, with the topic "Media, Power and Courage – on Credibility and Trust in Public Discourse." The talks began with a panel discussion in Kastelholm Castle followed by a round-table discussion at the nearby restaurant Smakbyn with three new speakers. The audience also participated in the round-table discussion.
The Kastelholm talks were filmed: The conversation at the castle was livestreamed in collaboration with Nipå and can be watched (in Swedish) here.

Kastelholmssamtalen 2018: Media, makt och mod – om trovärdighet och tillit i det offentliga samtalet
Torsdagen den 22.3.2018 hölls årets Kastelholmssamtal med temat "Media, makt och mod – trovärdighet och tillit i de offentliga samtalet". Samtalen inleddes med en paneldiskussion i Kastelholms slott och efter den fortsatte diskussionen med en rundabordsdiskussion i närliggande restaurang Smakbyn med tre nya talare. Publiken deltog också i diskussionen.

The first study on trust in the Åland Islands
Statistics and Research Åland has been commissioned by the Åland Government to carry out a survey of trust on Åland. Trust is often said to be the glue that holds a functioning society together and the level of trust in Nordic societies is comparatively high. The Åland Islands Peace Institute has been given the opportunity to contribute to the Åland study. Research developer Petra Granholm is responsible for the Peace Institute's contribution that focuses on the theoretical foundation and the societal issues.
Do Ålanders feel as much trust as people in other Nordic territories do? The results will be presented this fall and will at the same time be part of the status report that shows where Åland stands with regards to the sustainability goals.

Första tillitsstudien på Åland
ÅSUB har fått i uppdrag av landskapsregeringen att utföra en tillitsenkät på Åland. Tillit sägs ofta vara det kitt som håller ihop ett fungerande samhälle och tillitsnivån i Norden är enligt forskningen hög i jämförelse med andra länder. Ålands fredsinstitut har fått möjlighet att bidra till den åländska studien, i synnerhet med den teoretiska förankringen och med de samhälleliga frågorna. Ansvarig för fredsinstitutets bidrag är forskningsutvecklare Petra Granholm.
Är ålänningarna lika tillitsfulla som andra nordbor? Resultaten kommer att presenteras i höst och blir samtidigt en del av statusrapporten som visar var Åland står i förhållande till hållbarhetsmålen. Ålands radio har rapporterat om tillitsstudien, du kan läsa nyheten via länken nedan.

New intern at the ÅIPI
Aune Sanz is doing and internship at the Åland Islands Peace Institute from mid-March until mid-June 2018. Aune studies a masters in Statistics at the University of Helsinki and is interested in survey methodology, visualization of data and feminist criminology, which she studied in Univeristy of Otago, New Zealand. Eager to improve her Swedish skills during her stay in Mariehamn, Aune is fluent in Finnish, Spanish and English.
Ny praktikant på fredsinstitutet
Aune Sanz praktiserar på Ålands fredsinstitut från mars till mitten av juni 2018. Aune studerar statistik vid Helsingfors universitet och hon är intresserad av datavisualisering, enkätmetodik och feministisk kriminologi, som hon studerade vid University of Otago, Nya Zeeland. Aune talar flytande finska, spanska och engelska och är ivrig att få lära sig mera svenska under sin vistelse i Mariehamn.
