Focus on Feet...
The Running Foot
The running season is now in full swing and there are numerous races and fun runs to choose from. For the more adventurous type the Spartan and Tough Mudder is full of obstacles out in the bush or if you prefer not to get covered in mud, the Jetty to Jetty is in July and Bridge to Brisbane in August is just for you. Either way you go, it’s best to start training now to get yourself running fit.
Here are a few tips and tricks that will help make your training more effective with less chance of injury!
  1. Even before you start, have yourself fitted for a good pair of shoes! This will give you the support and cushioning your feet need and if in any doubt, come see your podiatrist to make sure the shoes are right for your feet.
  1. Start slow! We’d all love to be able to run a marathon first try in sub 3 hours but sadly there are very few with that natural ability. So, pick a distance you want to work towards and set yourself a realistic timeframe. If it’s your first time running start with alternate walk, jog, and slowly increase your jog distance. We recommend about a 10% increase per week in either the distance OR speed to avoid injury.
  2. Schedule in a rest day. If you’re just starting out, alternate a walk/jog with a rest day. This allows the body to recover and repair to make it stronger and more efficient. If you’re a bit more experienced, alternate your run with some weights or cycling, or interval work with a slow run.
  3. Stretch, stretch and stretch! It keeps the joints limber and helps in the recovery.
  4. If you begin to feel any aches or pains in the feet or legs, don’t wait to get it checked by your podiatrist. We’ll have you back running sooner!


Service Spotlight on...
Orthotics

 

Foot orthotics are commonly worn by a high percentage of the population. Ranging from children to everyday men, women and elite athletes. Orthotics reduce stress and tension forces on muscles, joints and ligaments realigning many biomechanical irregularities. The mythical growing pain is best treated with orthotics as children should not have pain when growing it is usually due to an anomaly that can be treated with an orthotic such as severe disease and Os Good Slaters disease.
Orthotics can be very effective for treatment of plantar fasciitis, shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, heel pain, flat feet and bursitis, post bunion surgery chronic knee and lower back pain. On a basic level orthotics prescribed by a podiatrist improve foot function, can make standing and walking easier as well as reduce the ‘tiredness’ that commonly contributes to foot pain.
Orthotics requirements are individual and the type of orthotic device for each person depends on the grade and level of correction, stability and support that is required for you. Factors such as the amount of running performed, type of sport played, age, foot pain levels and footwear worn will determine the type of orthotic one requires.
A comprehensive biomechanical assessment will determine the orthotic that will best suit your condition and footwear.

We said farewell to Podiatrist Erin Smith
In April we said goodbye to our new graduate Podiatrist Erin Smith.  Erin decided to move back to Melbourne to be closer to her family. She will be sadly missed by both the staff and the patients she treated during her time with us. We wish her the best of luck for her future endeavours.
