How many times have you had to wear a gas mask in your home over the past few years? Or save water in your reserve tank? Have you had to flee your house at the call of sirens or sit attached to your phone to hear from family members caught in a wildfire or flood zones?

Far too many of us now contend with the painful implications of the climate crisis on our lives. The same challenges that some of us may have once naively thought happened to people in faraway places are here at our doorsteps. Be it floods in Mozambique or the Gulf, fires in the Amazon or Yosemite, or water shortage in Rajasthan or California, we are collectively facing the consequences of this existential threat.

At Thousand Currents, we are clear that this is a moment for #ClimateRealTalk. Science tells us that we have but a few years to make significant changes or face catastrophic impacts on our lives, livelihoods, and futures. We also know that the political, economic, and social changes that we need to make cannot be achieved without popular, grassroots organizing. Supporting grassroots solutions is climate action.

Thousand Currents’ partners have been feeling the effects of the climate crisis for longer and more intensely than most of us in the Global North. They have been adapting, experimenting, and fighting for the things we all need for our collective wellbeing—food, soil, water, and air. In Nepal, the Digo Bikas Institute is harnessing the power of the sun for carbon-free energy, bringing community-owned mini solar grids to villages. In Brazil, Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra / Landless Workers Movement is taking back land for landless families—to date, 380,000 families and counting. In  Nigeria and South Africa, South Durban Community Environmental Alliance and the Health of Mother Earth Foundation are holding polluting industries accountable for clean air and clean water.

These are just a few examples of solutions that grassroots groups and movements around the world hold. Their visions, strategies, and practices transform despair and destruction into hope and regeneration. Through the end of the year, we will share real stories and real solutions from our grassroots partners for preserving our planet. The stakes may seem higher than ever. But our collective resolve is stronger.
