October 2017

I do hope that the children have enjoyed the first few weeks of the new academic year – we have achieved so much already and I hope that you will enjoy reading about some of these achievements in this newsletter.

We welcome Mrs Paula Mould to Chantry who will be teaching Miss Said's timetable when she is absent on extended leave. Miss Said is progressing well and we are very grateful for the messages of support from parents. Thank you.

It has been lovely to see so many of you in school for the Macmillan Coffee Morning and for the Year 5 Maths Lunches that have already took place. I do hope that you will be able to attend the Parents Forum at 1.30pm on Thursday 19th October for a cup of coffee and discussion with me if you have any questions or concerns. Please remember to contact the school office if you intend to attend.

Prior to the summer holidays we were informed that Chantry had been chosen as one of three schools in Northumberland to be part of the exciting Mini Police Programme. Over 80 children in Year 5 applied to be part of this programme but unfortunately there were only 10 places. Congratulations to Scout, Ryan, Rhys, Andrew, Kody, Lara, Matthew, Lucy, Jess & Vsevolod who were chosen as our Ambassadors. Watch this space for more details shortly!

Please remember that Friday 20th October is a Teacher Training Day. School will close on Thursday 19th October for the October half term at 3.30 pm and reopen on Monday 30th October at 8.55 am. Please remember that all the holiday dates are displayed in your child’s student planner and on the website.
The November newsletter will be published on Friday 3rd November. Watch out for it in your inbox. A paper copy will be given to your child if you do not have an email address on our system.

Steven Johnson
Head of School

Whole School Attendance for the academic year 2016/17 was 96.4%, up from 96.2% in 2015/16. We would like like to improve this statistic this year and would appreciate your help to work with us in achieve this. We have set a target of 97% for all year groups.

Attendance for the period 5th - 29th September is 97.3% ( compared to 97.4% last year) and class attendance as follows;

5B 5I 5N 5R 6C 6L 6W 6S
97.2% 99.4% 97.6% 98.2% 97.7% 97.9% 98.1% 97.8%
7M 7S 7W 7H 8O 8S 8N 8J
99% 97.9% 98.5% 97.1% 93.2% 96.5% 98.6% 95.2%

Please remember that, there are statutory arrangements in place for term time absences as dictated by the Government.  Schools MAY NOT grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.  We will consider each request individually taking into account the circumstances, such as the nature of the event for which leave is sought along with the pupil’s attendance and ability to catch up on missing schooling.
Please continue to submit a holiday form which should be sent into school for the attention of Mrs Sarah Chattaway, our Home School Link Worker
We would also ask that you make doctor and dental appointments out of school hours if at all possible.

Miss Edwards would like to know if any parents or friends of the school would be willing to give up valuable time to work with students in the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). In March 2017 we will once again be staging a range of events to raise the profile of STEM.  You could give a careers talk or simply talk about what your job entails or perhaps provide resources for practicals. Thank you in anticipation! Please contact Miss Edwards for further information.

Homework policy
The school's homework policy and your child’s homework timetable is on the school website in the parents section. There is also a section where a description of the Maths and English homework is given. All students have been given a homework book in English and Maths and this should come home at least once a week.

All students should be reading their accelerated reader reading book, be learning their spellings and times tables every evening.

If you have any questions about homework please contact your child’s subject teacher.

If you have a child in Year 4 or Year 8, may we remind you that you need to request a place at Chantry or the King Edward VI School by 31st October 2017. Please visit, for further information.
Can we also remind you that if you apply online you will receive an email to confirm this.  Please ensure that you have received this as a couple of years ago, one parent thought they has applied online but this was not the case. She then had four months of waiting for the decision. It was good news in the end!

If you are applying for a place at Chantry it is essential that you choose Newminster as your second choice as we expect demand for places to be very high.

Please contact Mr Johnson if you have any questions.
Open Evening
Thank you to those parents who attended our Open Day on Wednesday. Your comments are really appreciated. If you know of anyone who was unable to make the Open Day and they need a tour of the school before completing their preference form, please contact the school office to arrange a tour with Mr Johnson.

Comments from pupils and parents are as follows:

" Good activities in a relaxed atmosphere. Teachers very informative and students happy and well behaved."

" I really enjoyed making a key ring in Design Technology"

" Molly loved having a look around Chantry. The teachers were fantastic in welcoming us and showing us the different activities. Thank you so much for the opportunity"

School Direct
The Three Rivers Learning Trust Teaching Alliance is a lead school for School Direct, an exciting new way to train to become a teacher. Currently we have a number students training to be teachers across our partnership schools and beyond, both at primary and secondary level. Next year we are hoping to increase the number of places we can offer.
If you would like further information please contact Mrs Susan Brown, Lead Professional for Initial Teacher Training, at Chantry or visit our website!
Thank you
A huge thank you to all parents and carers who have very kindly contributed to our Design Technology department.  The money that has been donated will help us to continue to provide a wide range of tools and materials for all students to make high quality products.
Harvest Food Bank
This Harvest, we will be setting up a Food Drop Off Point to collect items in support of the Wansbeck Valley Food Bank. Wansbeck Valley Food Bank is a local charity set up to help prevent and relieve poverty or financial hardship by providing food parcels from donations they receive. The excellent work of the food bank can only continue with the generous support of local people and businesses, so if you are able to donate non-perishable food items please bring them into the main entrance before Wednesday 18th October.

Whilst the list below is by no means exhaustive, it gives you an idea of the non-perishable goods which are gratefully received by the food bank:
Basic donation list
Meals in a can (stew, chilli, curry, soup)
Tuna and canned meat
Peanut butter, jam and marmalade
Tinned foods (beans, spaghetti, rice pudding)
Cereals and cereal bars

Ellington Colliery Brass Band Visit
Members of the Ellington Colliery Brass Band visited Newmister and Chantry Middle Schools on Friday 15th September 2017.
The performed various pieces, demonstrated each sound of the instruments in the band and pupils even go to try some of the brass instruments.
They wanted to invite interested pupils to join Ellington Colliery Brass Band Academy which gives young people the opportunity to learn to play a brass instrument, play in an ensemble, have fun and build confidence.
They meet on Wednesday evenings, during term time, at Chantry Middle School.
If you are interested in becoming part of the academy or would like any further details please contact the Band Manager, John Colvine on 07734437987
NMS and CMS Pebble Project
Linking to the health and wellbeing of our students we have designed whole school projects to encourage individuality and uniqueness. This year we have planned for each pupil to create a unique design on a pebble and we are putting them together, as a school, to form an outdoor sculpture. We have based the project on a book called 'Only One You'.

Project with the Royal Opera House
Pupils at Chantry Middle School will be joining Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya, as he goes on a journey with The Royal Ballet into Peter Wright's production of The Nutcracker.  During this course the pupils will examine the basics of motif-development, character dancing and performance skills - completing the programme with your very own piece of choreography.
Year 5 Settling in evening
Year 5 seem to have settled in very well to Chantry. Please remember that if you have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s form teacher in the first instance. There will be an opportunity to discuss any issues on Wednesday 11th October from 4pm - 6pm.  You should have received a letter asking you to make appointments online. Please see the website for further information.
Year 5 Parental Survey
All Year 5 parents will be receiving a transition parental questionnaire soon. I do hope that you will take the time to complete this. Every year we listen to the views of our parents and have altered the transition process as a result of comments from you!
Year 5 Parents Lunches
Thank you to those parents in Mr Reilly's & Mrs Irving's Maths groups who came into school this week for their lunch and to see their child's Numeracy book. Please remember that parents are welcome into school from 11.20am on the following dates;
Tuesday  10th October – Mrs Dunphy & Mr Nicholson
Tuesday 17th October – Mrs Buckton

Lunches for parents in Years 6 to 8 will be offered in the next few months – watch this space!

Thank you for the following comments from parents who attended.

" It was lovely seeing what the children do and having lunch - what a lovely idea!"

" Had a great time! Lunch was very nice and loved the salad selection. Was very tempted by the chocolate slice - reminds me of my school days"

" It was great to be able to participate in the maths session and see the methods which are used"

" All the pupils were very engaging in the maths class and well behaved in the class and dinner hall - a very happy environment to be in! A good choice of options for lunch which my daughter always enjoys!"

" Would have liked more time in the Maths class!"

Please remember that if you have any questions about school lunches, please contact Alison Hoyle, Catering Manager, through the school office.

Safety reminders
Can you please remind your child to cross with Mr Henderson, outside the school gates and not at the top of the road – this is for their own safety!
I would also be grateful if you could not park on Mitford Road if at all possible. May I also kindly remind you that cars should not be driving onto the school drive unless you have permission from Mr Johnson.

Year 5 Fire Station Visits
5I and 5B have recently spent an afternoon at Pegswood Fire Station as part of our Citizenship programme.  They had an amazing afternoon which included a tour round the Fire Station, a ride in the fire engine with blue lights flashing, squirting objects with the hose and a visit down a training sewer and fire damaged room.  Cameron in 5I commented, "This has been amazing. The best day of my life!"  The other two Year 5 classes will be visiting over the forthcoming weeks.
Many thanks to the personnel at the Fire Station for making this such a memorable day.

Rugby Newsletter Sept 2017
The first game of the new season took place on Wednesday 20th September versus Mowden Hall. Following some excellent training the boys were victorious winning 50-0, a truly remarkable effort in the first game and one to boost the confidence of the players.
Over the next few weeks we have a number of games coming up including our first ever U11 game as a 3 Rivers Team. The training numbers over the last few weeks have been immense so please keep coming down and joining in.
The Football season is underway and it is the U12's who have started as they left off last year.
They have played two cup matches so far winning the first against Newminster 4-1 and the second against a strong Blyth Academy team 6-0 with some excellent performances.
The U13 began their season with a league match against St Benet Biscop and lost 7-1 to a very good side.
Numbers are good with over 60 turning out across the school for the boys.
Girls football begins with a tournament for both the U11's and U13's with numbers very good so far at training it should be a good season for both teams.

Chantry Netball
The U13 Netball league has begun with Chantry getting off to a brilliant start winning 6-3 against Richard Coates Middle School (league winners last year!) and 21-5 against Ashington Academy.
We currently have five lunch time netball clubs running at Chantry

Year 5 Monday
Year 6 Tuesday
Year 7 Thursday
Year 8 Wednesday
Year 8 boys Friday

Numbers attending all netball clubs are very good and some of our older girls in Year 8 are improving their leadership skills by helping out at Year 5, 6 and 7 clubs.
