Heidi Öst will be working as Mediation Officer at the Peace Institute, from October 2016 to October 2017, while Justina Donielaite is on maternity leave. Heidi has previously been working at the institute as Mediation Officer and Researcher. Heidi is at the final stage of her doctoral studies in Public Law at Åbo Akademi University, where she is finalizing her thesis on citizenship and voting rights in four autonomous areas, with Åland as one of the case studies.

Project researcher Dr Pirjo Kleemola-Juntunen spoke about the legal regime of Åland at a conference organised by the Nato Centre of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters (COE CSW) in cooperation with the Finnish Navy. The conference was held in Turku in October. Pirjo Kleemola-Juntunen works with the research project "Demilitarisation in an increasingly militarised world".

Territorial autonomies and the experience of coping with diversity are some of the themes Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark discussed during this fall at conferences around Europe. Sia has also participated at the international conference of the Council of Europe on the Framework Convention on Protection of Persons Belonging to National Minorities.

 

Heidi Öst ska vikariera som medlingsansvarig från slutet av oktober 2016 till oktober 2017, medan Justina Donielaite är föräldraledig. Heidi har tidigare arbetat som ansvarig för Ålands medlingsbyrå och som forskare vid fredsinstitutet. Hon är i slutskedet av sina doktorandstudier i offentlig rätt vid Åbo Akademi, där hon småningom ska presentera sin avhandling om rösträtt och självbestämmande i fyra självstyrda områden, med Åland som ett av fallen.

I oktober deltog Pirjo Kleemola-Juntunen i en konferens organiserad av  Natos kompetenscenter för operationer i grunda och trånga farvatten (COE CSW) i samarbete med finska marinen. Kleemola-Juntunen höll en presentation om Ålands rättsliga ställning. Hon forskar i frågor gällande havsrätt i forskningsprojektet "Demilitarisering i en allt mer militariserad värld".
