District Update
..................................................While the students are enjoying the "Lazy Hazy Days of Summer" the school buildings are ALL being transformed! Below is a quick update on each of the buildings as of July 5th!
New High School Complex
Inside: The second floor classrooms are complete, most of the cabinets are installed, and athletic equipment is installed in the gyms. Outside: Tennis courts are nearly complete, all outside scoreboards are completely installed, and the grandstand and press box are erected. Click the above high school picture for more pictures.
Washington Learning Center (Pre K - Kindergarten)
Inside: Demolition almost complete, new office complex and bathroom walls framed and rough-ins complete.
Outside: Started working on new entrance and playground work will start soon.
Jefferson Elementary (1st grade - 4th grade)Inside: Demolition is complete. New office walls are framed, the new multipurpose room continues to take shape, working on infrastructure for new freezer and cooler.
Outside: They will start work on front entrance and playground soon. Work on shared road with St. Paul's has started.
Middle School (5th grade - 8th grade)Inside: Demolition mostly complete. New walls for office and district conference room framed, HVAC, plumbing and electrical roughed in. Outside: New window and doors on the exterior have been cut out and work has started on the new entrance. As you can see from the picture the new sign is installed and the parking lot is filled with storage trailers! We are getting more than a New High School, there are lots of moving parts,

What hobbies do you enjoy? Being outdoors, pouring cement, landscaping, bonfires,playing kickball and basketball.
What is your current employer? Foundation Director at the New Ulm Medical Center
What is the strangest food you have ever eaten? Octopus. It was not good!!! It was rubber-like.
Best costume you have ever worn? Wicked old granny
What do you like most about New Ulm? A great community to raise our kids and live with many conveniences - healthcare and a great school system.

How long have you lived in New Ulm? Since 1960, this was my first teaching job.
What hobbies do you enjoy? Golf, playing cards, and church activities.
What do you miss most about being a kid? I miss riding my Palamino horse to the Trachsel residence where the country kids played town kids in baseball almost every day in the summer.
What is the strangest food you have ever eaten? Dim-Sum Chinese delicacies
What makes the ISD 88 Foundation mission meaningful to you? It enhances my commitment and love for education. I have been very caught up in and very proud of the Foundation's commitment to the Hall of Fame. It is off to a strong start and will likely get even better. Great group of people on the Foundation to work with as well. Thanks for the opportunity to serve.

I graduated from NUHS in 1991. In high school I played tennis and was on the danceline/pom pom squad. I also was in student council and was a class officer (though I have completely failed to uphold my duty to plan class reunions - thank you to all my awesome classmates who have carried the load!).
After high school I went to the College of St. Benedict, and a few years after graduating I moved to Chicago, where I earned my master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
I've spent almost 20 years working as a reporter for daily newspapers in the Chicago suburbs and in Denver, Colorado. In 2012 I moved back to Chicago to work for The Associated Press, where I currently cover the spectacle that is Chicago and Illinois politics.
Journalism has been an incredible career for a curious girl from southern Minnesota. It has allowed me to meet all kinds of people, from governors and presidents to ranchers and FBI agents and even convicted murderers. I've had a front row seat to some historic moments, and to some of the most heart-wrenching tragedy. In July 2012, I covered the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, that left 12 people dead. Our team at The Denver Post won the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism for breaking news coverage of that tragedy. I"m proud of the work we did - most notably, of the sensitivity with which we covered an intensely personal and local story. More than anything though, I wish it had never happened.
On July 23 I will marry a man who has been my friend for nearly 25 years. We met in college a few months after I graduated from NUHS, and we will be married at the church at St. John's University in Minnesota. My future husband, Ross Drever, and I live in Naperville, Illinois. He owns coffee shops and is a triathlete. I try my best to keep up on the occasional jog or swim.

Eagles Extravaganza 2016
Best year Ever!..................................................
This year's event raised over $43,000 with more than 365 people attending! This is a new record, GO EAGLES! GO NEW ULM!
New Ulm is known for its many festivals and the Eagles Extravaganza is another great community event. Education has been important in New Ulm's history and is proving to be important to our community today. This event is unique in that it draws all ages: recent and older alumni, parents, grandparents, community members, and business owners. Thank you to ALL of our donors and sponsors!
New Ulm High School Payne Street Singers
We enjoyed entertainment from the HS Payne Street Singers, HS Jazz Band, Pops Choir as well as the Eagles Elite Dance Team. This year we added some new games so everyone had fun! The evening was capped off with The Blue Ringer's Band. What a great night!
This year we partnered with the Friends of ISD 88 parent group and were able to give $5,000 from the silent auction to playground improvements at the "New" Jefferson Elementary- Middle School Campus!
Proceeds from the Eagles Extravaganza are used to fund educational grants. During the event we announced this year's grant recipient, Tracey Schmiesing and the Washington Learning Center. Through our granting process we were able to provide $12,500 for an Innovative Outdoor Learning Environment for kids Pre-K through Kindergarten. Thank you to all our grant applicants for taking the time to submit a project.
-------FOUNDATION IMPACT------
Innovative Outdoor Learning Environment Grant
This grant will provide many opportunities for students to express wonder about the natural world and approach tasks and experiences with flexibility and imagination. Using materials such as the magnetic wall and the ramp set will enable students to explore how things work, make hypothesis, test their theories, and revise thinking. The school anticipates a higher level of growth in many areas of development such as social problem-solving, large motor, fine motor, close observation, understanding quantities, estimation, as well as cause and effect. This project supports whole child learning.
Destination Imagination After School Program
After the success of last year's Destination Imagination grant, we decided to partner with the local 3M to provide $2,500 for an after school DI program for the 2016-2017 school year. All 5th and 6th grade students were introduced to the program this past year and now they will have the opportunity to enjoy it in an after school format! This is just another way we can encourage STEM programs in our schools.
