Back to school

Getting ready for the back to school "challenge" is fun and exciting, but it can also be a source of anxiety for many students and parents. In this issue, we offer some tips to help your stakeholders cope.

Community Relations

As we prepare for schools to open, be sure to remind your community that students will soon be walking and driving to and from school, and standing at bus stops. Traffic might be heavier so drivers should take extra care and plan accordingly.
Excitement is building
The air is full of excitement and some apprehension as students and parents prepare for the opening of school. Moving into the next grade level is fun, but can also be a source of anxiety. This Parent Tool Kit provides good information about school transitions that could be helpful to parents.

Attendance Awareness Month
How many times have you heard a teacher say, "we can't teach them if they're not here!" Student success is directly related to school attendance. This September, Attendance Works invites your district to participate in Attendance Awareness Month. The links above offer overall key messages for communicating the importance is student attendance to parents.
The video "Bringing Attendance Home," features parents telling other parents about the importance of attending school every day.

"A good campaign will engage parents, not blame them."

Fowler has previously served on the OHSPRA Board of Directors and was a reporter/editor prior to her position at Dayton Public Schools.
