Happy New Year!

Dear Members & Friends,

Thanks to you, 2016 has been another successful year for your Association!
We began by replacing the decaying, Point Loma sign along Harbor Drive with a new “indestructible” version.

And we ended the year at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, joining thousands of volunteers placing Wreaths Across America to honor American Heroes.

Under PLA leadership, local businesses now display 21 welcoming banners when our Submariners return after long, multiple-month deployments.
Good news and bad news for the Mean Green Team in 2016. The good news is our volunteers assembled each week at one of more than 18 locations to prune, plant and maintain the public areas we have beautified over the years.
The bad news is, this year they spent way more time picking up trash and garbage discarded by street people.
And even in our Peninsula paradise we find graffiti.
PLA volunteers work diligently to erase it.
Our Annual Town Hall Forum in May featured City Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman and other community leaders.
We covered topics ranging from the homeless and neighborhood crime, to airplane noise and the Chargers’ hopes for a new stadium.

Over the summer, PLA joined citizens and other community organizations in calling for the City of San Diego to address building code violations affecting new construction in Roseville and other local neighborhoods.
Mayor Faulconer stopped work on a project at the corner of Emerson and Evergreen and devised a plan to prevent future projects from attaining inappropriate heights.

Also this year we continued to work more closely with other organizations on both sides of the Point to communicate and coordinate our efforts, and to unite our voices to advocate on behalf of our community in dealings with the City, the County, the Port and other entities.

September is National Preparedness Month, and PLA hosted programs encouraging families to prepare to be self-sufficient for several days should a major catastrophe occur. And we provided suggestions on our website.

If you have not been to PointLoma.org, you are missing out! We post lots of Peninsula news and useful information.
Our 2016 Visions of Point Loma dinner party at Coasterra was a huge success!
Your support of that event is vital to continuing the important work of the Point Loma Association. We are all volunteers, but keeping up the quality of life in our community costs a lot! Get the details in our first ever Annual Report, issued in July.

Under the sponsorship of PLA, local artists continue to turn drab utility boxes into objects d’art.
And thanks to a generous donation from Dorothea Laub, PLA is conferring with several prominent artists and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture City to create artwork for the median on Nimitz Boulevard near West Point Loma Boulevard.
On December 1st, Pearl Hotel hosted a mixer with PLA and Connect Point Loma – great location, good food and lively conversation.  Thanks to all who attended. Stay tuned for details on our next gathering!
And this is kind of a big deal. After many years of negotiation, Point Loma Association has reached a binding agreement with Clear Channel Outdoor and the owner of the Dolphin Motel to have the billboard on that property removed by November 2019.  We’ll have to plan a big party then.
The Portuguese Historical Center recognized Point Loma Association with their Business and Community Leadership Award for 2016. We are pleased and grateful for their recognition of PLA’s 50+ years of dedication to the Point.
PLA picked up many new Business Members this year. We appreciate their support.

There is much more to be    accomplished. With your help it can  happen!!

In January we will install two new  Board members, each a terrific  addition to our roster of Directors. In  the months ahead, we have more  openings to fill. Several key Board embers reach term limits in 2017. Would you consider serving? Do you know a PLA member who would be a good candidate? Let us know.

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities – many that do not require digging or pruning. Honest! Want to work on membership, the Town Hall Forum, the annual dinner party, social mixers? Do you have marketing/communications skills? Financial? Legal? We welcome your help!

Do you have ideas for projects and activities PLA could pursue? Speak up. This is your Association.

PLA will continue to count on you in the years ahead. As 2016 winds down, please consider a donation. Funds given to PLA through the Point Loma Foundation can be tax deductible. Or you can always send a few dollars our way by clicking this link on our website.

Out in the “real world” 2017 is shaping up to be a very interesting year. It is comforting to know, at the end of the day, Point Loma is waiting and welcoming. May it always be.

On behalf of all the volunteers, thank you so much for your support. Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
Clark Anthony Burlingame
PLA Chairman
