It's a Double Win for Mitcham Community Orchard & Gardens!
We are delighted to report that one of our Dig Merton projects, known as Mitcham Community Orchard & Gardens has received two awards!

The first was from the Merton in Bloom judges in the category of community gardens. The second was from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, as part of their annual Clean Britain Awards, who tell us that our project 'shone out against the others'. Well done to all involved!

Tom Walsh tells us more about the project and shares his thoughts on the well deserved win

Sustainable Merton were overjoyed to receive a fantastic donation of £600 from our friends at Indigo Planning!

Staff at the award winning Wimbledon based consultancy company collected donations on 'dress down Fridays' and we are delighted to be one of their chosen charities this year. Thank you to all of the Indigo Planning team!
'The money will be used to carry on the work we do across the borough in helping residents reduce their impact on our environment.' - Tom Walsh
Community Engagement - Getting it Right

The focus of last month's well attended Environment Sub Group meeting was Community Engagement. This is an important issue for Merton charities, public services, social enterprises and businesses, and one that is difficult to get right. The main barriers were identified as lack of trust and the need to get out there and talk to people directly. Speakers highlighted how working with trusted partners and being organised and imaginative when trying to communicate your message can help to overcome these.

Volunteer Day at Lavender Avenue

On 30th September, Merton Council's Public Health Team joined us for a morning's work at Lavender Avenue Community Gardens. The team did a great job tackling weeds, harvesting the last of the crops and clearing the gardens for our Family Action Days. Thank you to all those who volunteered their time to dig for Merton!

Parks for People!

A new campaign has begun to make the provision and upkeep of public open spaces a statutory requirement of local authorities.

Despite their importance, this service is currently not statutory and is often seen as a 'soft option for cuts'. Some local authorities continue to economise on maintenance and have even considered selling them.
"Open spaces in all different forms are a vital ingredient for the health of our citizens and need to be valued in that light” - Tom Walsh.
