Gearing Up For Our New Season
As the days tick by and we realise that it is only two months until we are on the courts, your Board is getting excited for the season ahead. We are focussed on continuing to build a warm, welcoming, inclusive club environment that honours our traditions (yup, those whites! our great Early Bird program! our amazing social events! our 105 years of tennis!) while recognizing that some things need to change with the times (online booking for Court 3, gulp).

We've also worked hard over the winter to find new leadership for our tennis programs - from instructional to competitive to just plain fun. We've searched for a tennis professional who will work with our junior, intermediate and adult members to offer a variety of programming. So, drum roll...

We have hired Alastair Millar, and his company, The Supreme Court, to provide programs and services to our Club. You may have bumped into Alastair at Davisville Tennis Club or up at The Supreme Court Indoor (formerly the Fitness Institute facility). This summer Alastair as Program Director as well as a dedicated LPTC Head Pro will be at the Club to offer programs to our adult, intermediate and junior members, to provide group and private lessons as members request, to run our adult clinics, to coach our teams and to pitch in with fun programming during Club events. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Alastair and his team to the Club and introducing him to our members. If you wish to get a head start on the season or have any questions for him, feel free to reach out to Alastair at

Of course, as we design the schedule for 2017, we're all keeping a close eye on the balance of programmed time versus open play time and will be keen to get member feedback as the season progresses... what do you like? what would you like to see more of? what would you pass on? Our court utilization member survey continues to inform the decisions your Board is making to try to have something that offers a great club experience for everyone. Whether that is open play court time, lessons and clinics, competitive matches or organised round robins, we hope you can find a way to engage with your club this summer.

Please read on to get some key dates in your calendar as the season approaches and to find out more about Alastair and The Supreme Court. Finally, as you know, our Club runs on volunteers - so if you're keen to help whip the courts into shape in April, please reach out to our new Courts Director, Mark Girdler, at

Our email addresses are at the bottom of every newsletter, if you have questions or would like to pitch in, please drop us a note.

Fingers crossed for a warm and dry spring! See you on the courts.

Margot Willoughby (President)
Introducing Our New Program Director
Alastair has been Director of The Supreme Court since the organization began in 2014. He is one of only eight “Tennis Canada Club Professional 3” certified coaches in the country as well as being a certified “Tennis Canada Coach 3”. Holding both accreditations makes him one of the 5 most certified tennis professionals in Canada as of January, 2017.

The "Club Professional 3" designation is Tennis Canada's highest certification for club management and facility development, while the "Coach 3" course is a High Performance coaching designation specializing in long term athlete development, making Alastair an expert in tactical, technical, physical and psychological tennis fundamentals. On top of this, Alastair is also certified as a "Tennis Professional" by the United States Professional Tennis Registry along with certifications for Wheelchair Tennis and Cardio Tennis.

Alastair has produced top 10 U10 players in the province, top 5 U12 players in the country, U12 provincial champions, has developed internationally ranked U18 players, has toured internationally with ITF / WTA ranked players and most importantly has coached hundreds of club players at every level over the past 10 years.

Alastair is currently the Tennis Director at The Supreme Court Indoor, a four-court, year-round facility in North York, as well as being Head Tennis Professional at Davisville Tennis Club, an OTA award winning seasonal club and is also a High-Performance Coach at Advantage Tennis International.

Alastair has been published in Tennis Ontario Magazine and hosts The Supreme Court Tennis Podcast, the most watched tennis podcast on YouTube. His previous work experience involves being Head Tennis Assistant at Kew Gardens Tennis Club, coaching at Wanaka Tennis Club in New Zealand, The Boulevard Club, Tennis Canada’s U10 National Training Centre Program, Toronto Tennis Academy, North York Tennis Association and is honored to have coached (along with Ben Armstrong) 2015 Parapan Am Games Tennis Doubles Bronze Medalist, Joel Dembe.

Alastair is very excited to be leading Lawrence Park Tennis Club’s coaching and programs for the 2017 season. He and his team are thrilled to be given a chance to add to Lawrence Parks already stellar reputation and help to make LPTC’s player development programs some of the strongest and most enjoyable in the city. Please let him or his staff know how they can help make your 2017 experience an incredible one at Lawrence Park!

Our Games Director is looking for people who are willing to be captains/co-captains – so any member willing to help out, please contact This is one of our most popular events and cannot run itself so please consider volunteering to lead a team.
League Teams - Tryout Dates Set!
For those members who enjoy inter-club competitive play, this information is for you!

Each year we look at the team tennis options to assess whether they continue to meet the needs of the Club. After an extensive review we are staying with our existing team structure for 2017. This means we are fielding InterCounty Mixed A and C teams, (playing in the evening), Toronto Ladies Tennis League B and C teams and a North York Tennis Association ladies' A team (the ladies' teams are all day time teams). All teams play doubles matches which alternate between home and away games. For more details regarding teams, see our website at

We welcome and encourage members old and new to come try out, even if you have never played on an inter-club team before. The level of competition on these inter-club teams is quite high so these are a great progression from our House League teams for those wanting to try a more intense competitive format.

All tryouts will be held indoors again this year so that weather is not a factor. Each team will hold two tryout dates - you need to come and tryout only once . Please note: In order to ensure as many LPTC members as possible can participate in inter-club play, you may only join one team per season as a regular player.

To assist the us in scheduling, please advise our Games Director (Cecelia Thng at which tryout you will be attending.

Our renewal period for existing members has closed and we had 51 spots to offer to those at the top of the wait list - which we are currently in the process of doing. If members have friends or family interested in joining LPTC, please be sure to get them to get their names on the wait list. It is a 2-3 year list as we’re currently making offers to people who joined the wait list in late 2014 and early 2015. (The link to join the wait list is at:

We would like to clarify the ‘inactive status’ noted in our bylaws. There is no charge for going inactive. All non-renewing members are automatically put on hold for one year and are sent renewal reminders the following year. If you would like us to put your membership on hold for more than one season, you must make a request in writing to the Board to continue your ‘inactive status’. If approved, members who are unable to use the Club may suspend their membership for a second season without having to go to the bottom of the wait list. Application for this status should be made in writing to and include the reason for requesting the continuation .

If you would like to attend our amazing social events but are unable to play tennis then you have the option to participate as an adult social member.

  • Required shifts: minimum 42 hours over 7 shifts
  • Volunteer benefits:  tickets, uniforms, one meal per shift and a great tournament-ending party with food, drink and lots of prizes, special volunteer recognition programs and ticket offers
  • Next steps: 1) Submit your application using the link below; 2) attend an informal interview up at the Tennis Centre in early May and find out more
If you’d like to be part of the action, complete the New Volunteer Application at See great tennis (it’s the women this year), meet new friends (and maybe find new tennis partners) and give back to the sport we all love. As a 25 year+ volunteer myself, I highly recommend this experience.
