Happy January! We're looking forward to the 2017 outdoor season already and your new Board is meeting and working hard to get the Club ready for May 1.

First, many thanks to everyone who contributed to the Club and the fabulous fun we had on the courts in 2016. We tried hard to recognise the many hands it takes to make our Club run on our website at and apologies to anyone we missed.

Second, we had good attendance at our AGM on December 10th - the Board really appreciates all who came out on a Saturday morning to hear about the past year and ask questions about the coming year. Your engagement is very helpful to the Board and the forward momentum of our Club - THANK YOU!

As we considered the 2016 season in our review at the AGM, the following were some of the highlights:
  • Transitioned to QuickBooks - automated financial record keeping, standardized expense management and accruals (Karen Brown)
  • Engaged external auditor to conduct a financial review for 2015 and 2016 financials
  • Finished sprinkler head replacement project (John Richardson)
  • Attended Har-Tru court maintenance training in June (Tony Ercolani, David Douglas, John Mowat) and refined procedures
  • Repaired net posts November 2016 (David Douglas)
  • Invested in wind screens for the south side of the courts and 3 score keepers
  • Established team tryout assessment criteria (Cecelia Thng)
  • Offered 2 doubles strategy clinics to House League players
  • Received recommendations of Court Usage Sub-Committee (Caroline Gray, Saul Organ, Nenita Babaran, Janet Blair, Cecelia Thng)
  • Implemented best practices for our Junior Program instructor requirements - insurance, police checks, contracts, attendance info, etc
  • Sent junior members to the Ontario Mini-Rogers Cup (congrats to our two winning teams!)
  • Re-introduced junior club championships
  • Surveyed (Myra Mandel and Fiona Miller) local club management / head pro job responsibilities
  • Developed specifications for the 2017 head pro position (Tim Dalton, Cecelia Thng, John Mowat, Margot Willoughby, Farhad Hajkazmian) and advertisement posted on the OTA jobline
  • Reviewed bylaws (Molly Greenwood, Bob Milnes, Caroline Gray)
  • Started research on online court booking and electronic tag-up programs (David Douglas, Tony Ercolani, Deborah Hoffnung, Margot Willoughby)
  • Hosted great social events - opening BBQ, Italian Night Dinner & Trivia, Wimbledon Strawberry Social, Greek Dinner & Sing-a-long, Tournament Breakfasts of Champions, Barn dance (Anita Strauss and many dedicated volunteers)
  • Communicated through newsletters and website (Deborah Hoffnung)
  • Worked with the City on the new Toronto Tennis policy, wait list management, railing for stairs to club, lighting
Members asked some great questions on these items as well as on our terms and portfolios for new Boards, lighting options and cost sharing with the City, windscreens, and city public play hours. A presentation was also made on the online booking and electronic tag-up system under consideration and members were (and are!) invited to test the demo site at and provide comments to the committee (Deborah Hoffnung, Molly Greenwood, Tony Ercolani, David Douglas, Margot Willoughby).

Importantly, we elected the 2017 Board - saying farewell and huge thanks to Caroline Gray, Tim Dalton, John Richardson and Puica Nitu for their hours of service. We welcomed Terry Shoffner as Secretary, Mark Girdler as Courts Director, Farhad Hajkazemian as Junior Program Director and, in a late addition, Molly Greenwood for her umpteenth term as Membership Director. In addition, some portfolios were re-jigged - you can find the list of Board members at the bottom of this email.  Thanks to all who joined the team!

As we look forward to 2017 there are significant priorities on which we need to focus over the coming year(s). Some of these may require funds and we are grateful to prior members and Boards who have helped us build savings. Having run a balanced budget in 2016 (with a small surplus) we feel our savings are at a level that will protect against contingencies that might come our way, so the focus for 2017 is to:
  • invest in the quality of our courts, watering system, lights;
  • improve information on court availability;
  • invest in top quality club maintenance;
  • integrate a new head pro into the club;
  • plan events that bring the club together.
We are all so fortunate to belong to such a pretty clay court Club and look forward to seeing all our returning members on the courts in the spring. And through the balance of the snowy season, if you need to reach a member of your Board, our email addresses are all listed below.

Here's to a fabulous 2017 season!
