Dear members of The Block Museum of Art community,

To ensure the health and safety of our community, Northwestern University continues to closely monitor the evolving outbreak of coronavirus/COVID-19.

The CDC has clearly communicated that one of the most effective measures for controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is social distancing. In the interest of reducing the number of people on campus and slowing the opportunity for transmission, The Block Museum of Art, is closing to the public effective immediately.

This closure is undertaken in conjunction with Northwestern University’s decision to extend Spring Break and to conduct initial weeks of Spring Quarter coursework remotely. University leaders will reassess the situation by April 17 and decide then whether to continue remote teaching or to return to in-person instruction by April 27.  The Block Museum of Art will share further information about reopening on this same timeline via website, email, and social media.

The decision to close has been carefully considered. The Block Museum is deeply dedicated to its mission to serve as a springboard for collaboration and discussion. Our exhibitions are intended as only the starting point for inspiring encounters with new ideas and with one another.  With the safety of our visitors, staff, and students as our highest priority, we cannot currently cultivate the collective experiences and ongoing dialogue that give our work its meaning.

The work of the Block Museum evolves in close partnership, and we know this decision will have broad implications not only for our patrons but also for the faculty, students, departments, Chicago organizations, and colleague institutions, both nationally and internationally with which we have ongoing projects.  We appreciate your continued patience and support as we find creative solutions and navigate this period together.

Thank you
Lisa Graziose Corrin, Ellen Philips Katz Director, The Block Museum of Art
