Jazzy Piano Newsletter #1

Announcing a new video lesson,
Minor Blues One

Dear Fellow Pianists,

This is the first of my Jazzy Piano newsletters, especially sent to you because you have bought video lessons from my web site in the past.  These occasional newsletters will announce new videos or just give general tips on jazz, blues or cocktail piano.

In this newsletter I am announcing the arrival of my new forty-five minute video lesson, Minor Blues One. This is the first lesson in a series which focuses on the distinctive minor blues, an intriguing alternate version of the very familiar basic 12-bar blues.  The sound is generally described as darker and more dramatic. My teaching style for this lesson moves at a slow, easy-going pace, which simplifies learning.

In the new video we go thru the 12-bar progression, which is made up primarily of minor chords paired with a six-note minor scale, and show you how to get the two hands working together with a right-hand rhythm groove over a slow, walking, left-hand bass line. The six-note minor scale, which uses the minor 3rd, the flat 5, and a flat 7 produces the moody and darkly dramatic blues sound.

In these first lessons on the Minor Blues we will be in the key of Am.
Here is the scale we will be using.

I hope this has piqued your interest. If you would like to order and begin studying the minor blues, click over to the website:

On a personal note.....
I've just returned to California after spending an enjoyable five months in beautiful Dalat, Vietnam, where I had a steady gig in a restaurant, singing and playing jazz standards. The clientele was mostly made up of Vietnamese and Chinese tourists along with a small number of European and American ex-pats who have settled there. The Vietnamese and Chinese said they weren't familiar with the standards repertoire I was playing, but they enjoyed listening to the "new music to their ears" very much. The only songs that some of them might know were "Georgia" and Nat King Cole's "L-O-V-E."  Of course they also always also enjoyed hearing the blues, which always seems to be universally appreciated everywhere I go.

Please keep an eye out for future newsletters from me. I'll be trying to pass on piano tidbits that I hope you might find interesting.

Happy playing...!
