Dear Parents and Guardians of Students in Grades 7 and 8,

As we continue to fine tune plans for the 2021-22 academic year, we would like to provide you with some information regarding the Physical Education and Athletics program. Please note, specific COVID-19 health policies and protocols related to Physical Education and Athletics will be shared in the School’s reopening update scheduled for later this month.

Rye Country Day School considers the Physical Education and Athletics program to be an important component of the development of every student. Students in Grades 7 and 8 are required to take P.E. or participate in an interscholastic sport in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Grades 7 and 8 P.E./Athletics will begin on the first day of school. Class or practice occurs daily from 2:20 to 3:20 p.m.

Students have already selected a P.E. class or athletic team for the fall, winter, and spring seasons. On the first day, we will meet with the entire class/team to review the season and answer questions. The options offered this academic year are:

  • Fall Athletic Teams: Football, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer, Field Hockey, and Cross Country
  • Winter Athletic Teams: Wrestling, Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ and Girls’ Squash, Ice Hockey, and Fencing
  • Spring Athletic Teams: Softball, Baseball, Tennis, Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse
  • Physical Education: Classes offered for the fall, winter, and spring are Dance and Sports Conditioning (includes fitness training and sport games)
  • Sports Exemption: Students in Grades 7 and 8 may be granted an exemption for participation in a sport or activity that is not offered at RCDS in that season. Students applying for an exemption must speak with the Director of Athletics and Physical Education in order to receive the application.

Students in Grades 7 and 8 will be changing for P.E. and will be using P.E. lockers. RCDS-branded clothing is required for all practices and classes. Students are required to have RCDS shorts, t-shirt, sweatpants, and a sweatshirt. RCDS Physical Education clothing can be ordered and purchased online through Amerasport. We recommend ordering apparel now to ensure it arrives before the start of school. Families who receive financial aid will receive an email from the Financial Aid Office regarding assistance for required P.E. clothing.

Students may also be asked to provide personal equipment for participation (sneakers, cleats, gloves, stick, shin guards, helmet, ice skates, etc.).

Magnus Requirements
The Magnus Health Portal will notify you via email when your student’s health records need to be completed. Any required information needs to be submitted by August 1. In addition, New York State requires that parents complete the Interval Health History Form before the start of a new sports season. The Interval Health History Form is located in Magnus and must be completed for the fall by September 1. Please contact Nancy Gordon, RN, at, with any questions.
