CEO Report

As you may now be aware, Gold Coast Medicare Local has been successful in its bid to become the Gold Coast’s Primary Health Network and we are now in negotiations to finalise contractual arrangements. The Commonwealth Department of Health has provided a performance framework for Primary Health Networks, which will guide us as we develop our future priorities. More

Primary Care Census results now published

Gold Coast Medicare Local has published results from its Primary Care Census conducted late last year. Staff have been using these results for some time to guide activity and have already started shaping Gold Coast Medicare Local’s future priorities. A number of suggestions have been enacted including delivering priority training, information sessions on the service directory and the ATAPS (Access to Allied Psychological Services) program and work with the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service on discharge summaries. Falls prevention in aged care facilities

With falls a major cause of hospitalisation, the Gold Coast Medicare Local Better Health Care Connections Project has funded falls prevention classes at selected residential aged care facilities across the Gold Coast. Gold Coast Medicare Local CEO Matt Carrodus said falls were a major cause of hospital admissions for seniors aged 65 and over. More

Flu immunisation encouraged this year

Gold Coast Medicare Local wishes to advise that the 2015 flu vaccine has arrived after manufacturing delays, adding two new flu strains to the vaccine to better fight the winter bugs we are expecting. There is already a significantly higher amount of flu cases than at the same time last year. Gold Coast residents, particularly those most vulnerable such as the aged and those with chronic medical conditions, are urged to book their flu shots as soon as possible as there is less than a month until winter. This month's issue is ... National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated in Australia from 27 May to 3 June. This commemorates two significant milestones - the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. As part of Gold Coast Medicare Local’s organisational commitment to reconciliation, the Closing the Gap Indigenous Health team and non-Indigenous staff  have implemented the Gold Coast Medicare Local Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP is about working together as an organisation in the development of areas such as respect, opportunities and relationships.

Gold Coast Medicare Local is trying to reduce indigenous disadvantage in healthcare through Closing the Gap initiatives on the Gold Coast. Program officers provide cultural safety training to primary health providers, identify culturally sensitive delivery needs among general practices, drive up vaccination rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and work with the Queensland Chronic Disease Wellness Program. For more information, contact the Closing the Gap team on 07 5612 5411 or  07 5612 5410.
