The exhibit will open July 21 and run to August 30.


This June we're happy to feature Philip Post as our Artist of the Month! Philip Post is a 21 year old self taught artist from Norwalk, CT. He started his brand dertbag in 2007 at age 12. Post has shown his work in Tokyo, Vienna, NYC, and LA. In 2013 Philip opened his ‘dertbag atelier’ at age 18 at the historic Arcade Mall in downtown Bridgeport, CT.

He recently contributed to an article in Vogue Magazine: "Kanye’s Favorite New Designer Shares 5 Must-Visit Connecticut Spots That Are Actually Cool"

CALL FOR ARTISTS: ”SameSex 2016” at City Lights

SUBMISSION DETAILS:

City Lights has extended the submission deadline to June 30, 2016 for the “SAMESEX Exhibit 2016” for artists who would like to express their solidarity, condolence, pride, outrage In response to the most recent tragedy in Orlando Fla.

The exhibit will open July 21 and run to August 30. Join us Thursday July 21, 5:30-8:30 pm for an Opening Reception, at City Lights, 855 Main St. Downtown Bridgeport, CT. 06604


City Lights is extending a call to all artists for our 6th annual Same Sex exhibit, scheduled for July 2016. SameSex explores LGBT themes, same-sex attraction, related feelings and issues of 2016. Artists need not be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender to participate.
                                   
City Lights is a nonprofit arts organization located in downtown Bridgeport CT. that serves the community through art , easily accessible by Metro-North, Port Jeff Ferry, I-95 and the Merrit Parkway via the Route 25 Connector. There is no size limit to the dimension of art submitted, however larger works, over 60" will be subject to space limitations.

SEND SUBMISSIONS IN JPEG FORMAT,(no more than 8 images), 72 DPI, DUE BY June 30th, 2016 to: clgallerybpt@gmail.com

Pack up the family, bring your lawn chairs and your appetite for the first ever Barnumpalooza at Seaside. Enjoy the Park as P.T. intended when he, along with other residents, donated the land in 1864. Sure to be a delicious event!

Fee
$5 General Admission, VIP seating available for $25 (11 am to 5 pm) or $40 (11 am to 10 pm), includes up front seats for musical performances, and special access to the beer garden. Food and beverages can be purchased.

SPECIAL EVENT: A Broadway Songbook Cabaret: 1940’s And More!

Event Description: Join us for a benefit evening for After School at the Klein (ASK) - Bridgeport’s only tuition free after school arts education program. We will be honoring Mr. Robert D. Scinto with the Jacob Klein Leader of Distinction Award. The extraordinary cabaret performance will feature Bridgeport’s own Maureen Hamill, with Simone DePaolo, Robert Fallon, Kevin Miller, Mary Richard, Kerry Lambert and pianist, David Harris. The event will start in the tent with Conversation and Cocktails as well as ample hors d’oeuvres at 6:30PM and move into the auditorium at 8:00PM for the awards ceremony and cabaret performance.

Event Description: Urinetown: The Musical is a satirical comedy musical that premiered in 2001. It satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement and municipal politics.  “Urinetown will make audiences laugh and sing but it also explores real social issues. It will change the audience, and more importantly, the performers to think- Am I willing to do what is right? - For these reasons we think it is the right show to do our first year,” says Susan Wright, President of the Mighty Quinn Foundation as they are now the umbrella organization of In The Spotlight.

Featured art includes creations and select pieces, clothing and accessories from the Made In Bridgeport collection, collectible and restored Mid-century Modern furniture from Orbitz studio, vintage postcard art by Steve Gerber, steam punk lamps by Dave Rosenberg, still-lifes by Maralyn Adlin, photography by Jay Misencik, furniture assemblage by Vince Filardi, fabric art by Karen Loprete,intage radios collected by George Dragone.

 ARTIST OF THE MONTH JUNE 2016
PHILIP POST
Philip Post is a 21 year old self taught artist from Norwalk, CT. He started his brand dertbag in 2007 at age 12. Post came up with the name after a flare up of his Crohn’s disease. His Crohn’s disease made it nearly impossible to school. Instead, Philip channeled his energy into his art, creating his own world with dertbag. Post has shown his work in Tokyo, Vienna, NYC, and LA. In 2013 Philip opened his ‘dertbag atelier’ at age 18. He sells his dertbag brand and his father’s brand Frank Foster Post here. He also works on his personal artwork and music at the atelier. 
Q. How would you describe your designs?
Out of my mind.
 
Q. Why were you attracted to be a street wear designer?
I like wearing things people don’t have.
 
What is your process like? 


My process for my collection is usually based around events I have gone through. I am now trying to make each collection more personal, and trying to create from within. I listen to music, go through old books, experience, experiment, and end the chapter of my life with my collection, which brings on a new chapter…
 
Q. What inspires you?
Life. Colors. Natural occurrences. Original people. Taking risks.
 
Q. How do you think you’ve changed or developed as a designer?  

I have developed and progressed as an artist, and matured as a designer. I am the 21 year old version of my 12 year old self.

Q. An article in the Connecticut Post quotes you saying "My whole life I haven't lived the normal kid route.” Can you describe how you feel your upbringing has influenced you as a designer?
Both of my parents and sisters are artists. I grew up in an art environment with creatives in every room. I didn’t really go to high school due to my Crohn’s disease, but instead I turned the negative into a positive and worked on my brand. Taught myself the adobe suite and final cut pro. Put my energy into something constructive and cool.

Q. Kanye West was recently photographed wearing one of your designs and then later you contributed to a Vogue article about your favorite CT hotspots. Can you tell me a bit about this experience your rise as a designer?
A. I’ve always been making clothing. Everything good in my life has come from me creating and being true to myself. It’s only natural to be where I am now. I just need to continue to impress myself.

No one else can do what I can do the way I do it.

Expansion. International pop ups. Full cut n sew collection. Higher quality goods. A better sense of myself.
