New Interdisciplinary Studio Teaches Real-Life Solutions For Students

ArcD at The University of Kansas is continually working with firms to create new curricular opportunities that connect design education and professional practice.
Last spring, in a new Experiential Design studio led by practitioner/instructors from Kansas City’s Dimensional Innovations and the Los Angeles design firm, Public-Library, KU students learned tools most designers only learn on the fly in the real world.
Studio instructor Ashley Loch, Associate Creative Director for Dimensional Innovations and a 2010 KU Industrial Design graduate, said the course was designed to fill gaps employers find in hiring while also giving students a chance to explore different career paths. The course drew students from different programs, such as Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, and Visual Communication Design, which means they had different insights and knowledge.

Alumni Gift

Tony Thompson, KU architecture alumnus (’83) and CEO & Chairman of St. Louis-based KWAME Building Group, pledged a five-year commitment to support ArcD’s Multicultural Architecture and Design Scholars Programs. Provided through Mr. Thompson’s KWAME Foundation, this $10,000 annual gift will no less than remake what is possible for these two programs. Thank you, Tony!

Design Outside Studio

This summer, students in design professor Jeremy Shellhorn's Design Outside Studio spent a week exploring, studying, and documenting the flora, fauna, and landscape in Rocky Mountain National Park. Students created graphics and illustrations to celebrate and commemorate the theme of “regrowth” and how it is manifested in the park's wildlife. The studio concluded with an exhibition of the students’ work at the park’s Beaver Meadows Visitor Center in Estes Park.

New Design Department Chair

Tim Hossler, associate professor of visual communication design, has been named the new chair of the Department of Design. Hossler arrived at KU from Miami, Florida, in 2011, with over 20 years of professional experience. He grew up in Dodge City, Kansas, but started his career as a designer in New York City where he served as in-house art director for celebrity and fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz. Hossler helped Ms. Leibovitz create her most memorable images, books, and exhibitions of the late 1990s through the early 2000s. He holds a degree in Architecture from Kansas State University and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
