New Interdisciplinary Studio Teaches Real-Life Solutions For Students
ArcD at The University of Kansas is continually working with firms to create new curricular opportunities that connect design education and professional practice.
Last spring, in a new Experiential Design studio led by practitioner/instructors from Kansas City’s Dimensional Innovations and the Los Angeles design firm, Public-Library, KU students learned tools most designers only learn on the fly in the real world.
Studio instructor Ashley Loch, Associate Creative Director for Dimensional Innovations and a 2010 KU Industrial Design graduate, said the course was designed to fill gaps employers find in hiring while also giving students a chance to explore different career paths. The course drew students from different programs, such as Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, and Visual Communication Design, which means they had different insights and knowledge.

The studio concluded with an exhibition of the students’ work at the park’s Beaver Meadows Visitor Center in Estes Park.
