Donate to a worthy cause on #GivingTuesday

We celebrate commerce on Black Friday, Small-Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, but did you know about Giving Tuesday? Giving Tuesday, also known as #GivingTuesday, is the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this year on Nov. 29, and it's set aside as a day to donate to worthy causes. The Sitka Local Foods Network will host its second #GivingTuesday online fundraiser starting on Nov. 29, and we'll keep our donation page up through Dec. 31 so people can make end-of-year donations for tax purposes. The minimum donation is $5, which can purchase a couple of packages of seeds to grow fresh veggies. We just received our Pick.Click.Give. donations, and want to thank the 42 donors who gave us $2,800 from their Alaska Permanent Fund Dividends, but a clerical snafu will keep us out of the 2017 Pick.Click.Give. program. We're hoping our #GivingTuesday campaign might help us recoup some of the loss. To learn more about how you can support the Sitka Local Foods Network, click this link.

We need new board members to keep growing

The Sitka Local Foods Network has three open seats on its board of directors due to some unexpected moves out of Sitka, and we also have three board seats whose terms end at the end of the year. This is your chance to help us increase the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. There obviously is a lot of interest in local food projects (see the Sitka Health Summit story below), but we need board members to help make these projects happen. Our nine-member board meets once a month (currently the third Wednesday) at the See House located behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church on Lincoln Street. Our board members also serve on at least one committee related to our main projects — organizing the Sitka Farmers Market, growing food at St. Peter's Fellowship Farm communal garden, and hosting a variety of gardening educational opportunities. Our next board meeting is from 6-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14 (we're meeting early this month due to the holidays), at the See House behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church (upstairs).

Sitka Health Summit chooses two food projects for 2017

Healthy nutritious local food was the theme as about 75 citizen planners at the 10th annual Sitka Health Summit planning day chose two food-related community wellness projects on Oct. 21 to work on for 2017. The citizen planners chose one specific topic project (which can be finished in one year) and one broad topic project (which might need more than one year to complete). This year's specific topic project is to identify and build new community gardens in Sitka, which became an issue with the recent closure of Blatchley Community Gardens. The broad topic project is to help the various organizations working on local and healthy food projects in Sitka combine or collaborate to become more efficient, especially since many of the groups have had difficulty keeping board members. The two projects held kick-off meetings in November, and new meetings take place early this month. The next community gardens meeting is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Sitka Community Hospital classroom (downstairs). The next food group collaboration meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, at the See House behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church. Sitka Kitch offers Cooking From Scratch series

Want to learn how to expand your culinary skills while serving healthy meals and stretching your food dollar? The Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen is offering a Cooking From Scratch class series this fall. The two remaining classes include Whole-Grain Breads Using the Tassajara Technique on Monday, Nov. 28 (rescheduled from Nov. 7); and Winter Morning Creations (Baked or Fried Pancakes from Around the World) on Monday, Dec. 5. All three classes take place from 6-8:30 p.m. and cost $27.50 each plus a food/supply fee shared among all students in the class. Registered dietitian and health educator Lisa Sadleir-Hart is teaching the classes. There is limited space available in each class, but we need at least eight people to register by the Friday night before each class to make sure the class is a go (late registrations will be accepted for the breads class). Also, Nickie Knight will teach a Holiday Make and Take class on Monday, Dec. 12, where students will make a variety of bath and body products. This class costs $20 plus a supply fee.
