February Newsletter 2016

Hello friends and colleagues - Welcome to the Agave Print Studio Newsletter 3.

This is a photograph I took in Trentham in early January. It's a great inspiration for the Xmas and New Year festivities and a good way to live the rest of the year too.

Upcoming Workshops

Porcelain Multiples
Sat-Sun Mar 12-13
Use your drawings to create a unique set of multiples. Porcelain plates will be fired using laser-printed decals of your drawings, then you can add colour using traditional china paints. Your original drawings will be scanned and printed to create the decals.

Easter Workshop: Progressive Photopolymer Intaglio Printmaking
Fri-Mon Mar 25-28
A new photopolymer plate process each day, each technique more advanced, extending the skills already learned. Photographic images or drawings can be used. Previous experience with photopolymer printmaking is useful for this workshop.

Chine Collé Investigations
Fri-Sun Apr 8-10
A different type of chine collé each day, starting with traditional gampi paper with photopolymer plates, followed by shaped gampi paper, inkjet chine collé, coloured pencil chine collé, and metal leaf chine collé.

Studio News

The Toowoomba Art Group were spectacularly hospitable and I had a great time teaching beginners and experienced printmakers a new relief/intaglio technique based around working up a fine line image using scraperboard.

I stayed with Ute Braatz and found out a lot about having chooks which I would like to do in the future.

The Agave Print Studio Summer School had participants from NSW, Tasmania, SA and a local printmaker from Maldon, near Castlemaine. The four participants made multiple plate prints and inkjet chine collé prints in A5, then used the techniques learned to make larger A3 prints. A great dinner at the Radio Springs Hotel at Lyonville was a culinary highlight.

The Centre for Creative Photography hosted a CMYK four plate separation photopolymer workshop which was held at Bowden Studio in Adelaide. It was a busy two days with experienced photographers making four plates and then printing them in register.

Next at Bowden Studio I ran an introductory print workshop where we firstly made drypoint on polycarbonate plates and also used the cardboard drypoint plate which is so useful for combining line and tone.

Then we combined copper plates bitten with Ferric Chloride with a tonal plate made using photopolymer plates. The plates were printed together, combining copper plate line imagery with tone areas on the photopolymer plate.

Many and varied prints have been made at Agave Print Studio over the last few months. Carolyn Pettigrew made silver on black prints, Judy Horacek came back to help print editions from her successful exhibition at Beaver Galleries, and I made works for exhibitions at Tacit Contemporary Art and Latrobe University Gallery.

In February Trudy Rice and Lisa Sewards made the first A2 sized plates at Agave Print Studio! And Lisa is printing her two plates together to make a larger print.

The garden continues to make progress, and is a source of much effort and resulting pleasure.

I had wwoofers Mona and Markus here in February who did lots of work tidying the garden. Then Anna Span came and helped with tidying storage sheds. While Anna was here we were fortunate to visit Debbie-Ann who has an amazing collection of exotic birds. The wwoofers did wonderful work, and I am very appreciative. They all loved Lottie dog.

About Lottie

Lottie dog has progressively improved after being hit by a car on November 1. She has been swimming and had physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. Each time she falls over she wags her tail and gets up. We can learn a lot from dogs. Another few months and lippity loppity Lottie will be walking a lot better.
